Stay Safe: How to Spot and Avoid Scams Targeting Your Personal Information

At Northwoods Credit Union, your security is our priority. We’ve recently become aware of fraudulent text messages being sent to individuals, including a scam impersonating the IRS. These messages attempt to steal personal information by claiming you’re eligible for an Economic Impact Payment and directing you to click on a link or reply with sensitive details.

To help you stay protected, we’re sharing some key information on how to spot and avoid these scams.

What Does the Scam Look Like?

These fraudulent messages often:

  • Pretend to be from trusted organizations like the IRS.
  • Claim you’re eligible for money or other benefits.
  • Use urgent language to pressure you into acting quickly.
  • Contain links to fake websites designed to steal your information.

How to Protect Yourself

Follow these steps to avoid falling victim to these types of scams:

  1. Don’t Click on Suspicious Links
Never click on links in texts or emails that you weren’t expecting, especially if they ask for personal or financial information.
  2. Verify the Source
If you receive a message claiming to be from an official organization, contact that organization directly using a trusted phone number or website—not the one provided in the message.
  3. Know How the IRS Communicates
The IRS (Or Northwoods Credit Union) will never ask for personal information via text, email, or social media such as Facebook, Instagram, X, etc..
  4. Report Suspicious Messages
If you receive a suspicious message, forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it. Reporting scams helps protect others from being targeted. You can also directly contact us at Northwoods Credit Union with any concerns.
  5. Be Skeptical of Urgency
Scammers often try to make you act quickly by creating a sense of urgency. Take a moment to evaluate the message before responding.

What to Do If You’re Targeted

If you suspect that you’ve received a scam message:

  • Do not reply, click any links, or provide any information.
  • Report the message to the appropriate organization (e.g., the IRS or your credit union).
  • Monitor your accounts for any unauthorized activity.
